Origins of the German Language
The German language is one of the major world languages which developed out of Info-European and is closely related to Dutch and English.
The German language is spoken by about 95 million native speakers along with approximately another 28 million non-native speakers and German is the 4th most commonly spoken language in the United States.
German is widely taught in schools and universities in Europe and holds the Guinness Book of Records first place for the language that has the most written translations into and from a language.
Where German is Spoken
Geographic Distribution of the German Language
German is the primary language of Germany and Austria and is widely spoken in Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Denmark. Due to wide spread migration, German is also spoken to some extent in France (Alsace, Moselle), Belgium, Poland, Italy, Romania, Hungary, Iceland, Russia, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Namibia, Slovenia, Croatia, the Baltic countries, Argentian, and Brazil.
All total, there are approximately 124 million native and non-native German language speakers.
